Capital Thai is located in the heart of Sydney’s historic Haymarket produce area covering both east and west sides of George Street which is the main north/ south artery of the city from Circular Quay to Broadway.

Positioned in the middle of Haymarket in Campbell Street on the east side of George Street, Capital Thai began in May 2003 as the first of now many Thai businesses which have now caused the City Council to declare the precinct to be formally designated as Thaitown with Chinatown on the western side.

Capital Thai was founded by Jarun Pompanya who hails from Chaing Mai in the north of ThaiIand. It was Jarun’s abilities as a chef with formal catering experience in one of Sydney’s finest hotels and having started some 4 otherThai restaurants in Sydney that saw him being selected by the Landlord to create Capital Thai.

Jarun has shown that he is a person with great intuition with the first authentic modern Thai cuisine restaurant in Thaitown which is adjacent to the heritage listed Capitol Theatre of Haymarket.The restaurant has been designed to cater for local customers but is now a major Thai tourist eating and meeting destination. This has seen him become fully involved in Australia’s Thai community which has included being the President of the Thai Restaurant Association 1999 — 2001 and the immediate Past President of the Thai Golf Association of Australia.

Capital Thai restaurant is a relaxed family and fine dining venue readily catering for theatre patrons with a pre-theatre a la carte menu even though this is a rush hour for fine food and all beverages. The all Thai staff are well trained for such theatre customers.
